Ranking the Star Wars Franchise

Which one will be best?

I’m not going to lie, I am not a huge Star Wars fan, I appreciate and like the series, but am not a super fan, who knows everything about the films, characters, etc. I also don’t hate anyone of these films, but it is a movie series that I enjoy and with the final chapter released recently, I thought it was about time to rank every live-action film in the franchise.

11. Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones

In my opinion, this is easily the worst of the series, the acting is wooden, the dialogue is cringey and it was far too reliant on CGI, which has aged this movie a lot. It’s not all bad, with some cool fight scenes and new characters introduced, but compared to all the others, it really does not compare.

SCORE: 4/10

10. Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo is one of those movies I would compare to the standard formula Marvel movie. Think the Ant-Man movies or the first two Thor movies. It is nothing awful, but nothing great either. Just an average, but fun action sci-fi movie which didn’t need to be made.

SCORE: 6/10

9. Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace

This is the first Star Wars movie I remember coming out (I was 6) and the first that I saw in the cinema, so it is nostalgiac to me for that reason. I remember the big buzz about the return of Star Wars and a ton of merchandise being released. The movie itself is a bit boring, but features one of the coolest looking villains of all time: Darth Maul and one of the best light sabre duels at the end, for that reason it edges over the other two.

SCORE: 6.2/10

8. Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi

When I first saw this movie I liked it a lot, but the more I thought about it, the more it made no sense to be a middle movie of a trilogy. It took the story nowhere, created more questions than it had answers and killed off Luke Skywalker in a very unsatisfying way. This is the movie that divided Star Wars fans and I honestly don’t think it will ever get back to where it was a few years ago.

SCORE: 6.5/10

7. Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith

Revenge of the Sith is easily the best of the prequels, it shows the downward spiral of Anikan Skywalker to Darth Vader in great detail, which is what we wanted from the prequels. It also features one of the best lightsaber duels of all time at the end between Anakin and Obi-Wan.

SCORE: 7/10

6. Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens

The return of Star Wars in 2015 was a huge event and I got caught up with the hype. Although it played with a lot of of our nostalgiac strings, it was a great return to form and was way better than anything the prequels ever had to offer. This got everyone back on the Star Wars hype train and introduced some truly great characters and brought back the best ones.

SCORE: 7.2/10

5. Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker

I seemed to enjoy Rise of Skywalker a lot more than most people did. The beginning was very rushed and there was a lot of silly moments, but I have a soft spot for the Emporer and loved every single scene he was featured in. The fight scenes had emotional weight behind them and I really like Kylo Ren’s character arc throughout the three movies. I think J J Abrams did the best he could to recover after The Last Jedi and this is my favourite of the sequels.

SCORE: 7.5/10

4. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Rogue One, in my opinion,┬áis the closest any Star Wars movie has gotten to the original three. The story is nothing special and neither are the characters, but it plays with nostalgia very well and has some great scenes – in particular, the Darth Vader fight scene towards the end. This is the most fun I’ve had in the cinema with a Star Wars movie and I would prefer for Disney to do more interesting side projects like this.

SCORE: 7.8/10

3. Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope

Now let’s be honest, the difference in the quality of these next three films vs the rest is huge. In the late 70s when A New Hope came out, no one had ever seen a movie like this before and it is still to this day an amazing opening chapter in an epic three-part story. You do not have to have seen the prequels to understand this story, or reading any side content, it was a great story, with iconic characters and is one of the most influential movies of all time.

SCORE: 8.2/10

2. Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back

The Empire Strikes Back is most people’s favourite of the series and for good reasons! It has some of the best action, twists and character moments of the series with a fantastic ending, which hardly any other movie I can think of apart from many Infinity War, that made you want to see the next instalment straight away. It is a legendary movie which has gone down in history as one of the best sequels and arguably one of the best movies of all time.

SCORE: 8.8/10

1. Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi

I know this movie gets flack for the Ewoks, but apart from these small characters, this movie is the most epic in scale. The opening scene in Jabba’s palace is an excellent opener, the return of Han Solo is emotional and the final fight between Luke, Dark Vader and the Emporer is the real reason this is number one. The ending of this film goes down in history as one of my favourite endings to a film and the Emporer is one of my favourite movie villains ever.
